Avants Continues Hot Streak; Reaches Finals in Allentown

June 14, 2004 01:54 PM

Cory Ann Avants, from Gastonia NC, continued her torrid pace on the USTA Pro Circuit by reaching the doubles final of the Mecco Cup in Allentown, PA last weekend. Avants and partner Varvara Lepchenko defeated three strong teams en route to the finals, before falling to fellow Americans Diana Ospina and Angela Haynes.

In the opening round, Avants and Lepchenko easily defeated Whitney Jones and Tiya Rolle by a score of 6-2 6-1. They went on to defeat top-seeded Ilke Gers and Cindy Watson in a three set second round match, 6-3 4-6 6-4. In their third match of the tournament, they took out Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios and Jewel Peterson, in straight sets, 7-6(6) 6-2. In the finals, Avants and Lepchenko were bested by Ospina and Haynes 6-0 6-2.

Over the past few weeks Avants has been making steady strides in her professional career. Her strong performance in Houston earlier this month along with her appearance in the doubles final in Allentown have served notice that she is becoming a force to be reckoned with on the USTA Pro Circuit.

The USTA organizes, sponsors and administers the USTA Professional Circuit, the gateway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis professionals and a frequent battleground for established players. The 2004 circuit features nearly 100 events for men and women. Prize money at USTA Professional Circuit events ranges from $10,000 to $75,000, with more than $3 million in purses this year.
