Team Georgia Captures Mildred Southern Cup and Gil Stacy Memorial Cup

June 7, 2004 03:09 PM
The “crown jewel” of Southern tennis, the 18th Annual Southern Senior Cup, in its 11th year in Columbus, GA featured 300 of the top Southern players competing for their state team in Men’s and Women’s 35-75 age divisions. Team Georgia took home both the Mildred Southern Cup and Gil Stacy Memorial Cup while North Carolina and South Carolina captured the Men’s and Women's Overall Championship, respectively.

Many commented, “We should sell tickets to watch this tennis!” Teams include several former tour players and internationally and nationally top ranked senior players competing in a unique format that awards points for victories in several categories.

In addition to the superb tennis, it is the team camaraderie that makes many say this is their favorite tennis weekend of the year. The 35s cheer on the 75s, the men cheer for the women and visa versa. Many friendships are rekindled during these four days as well as great rivalries!

Columbus has hosted this event for eleven straight years and will host the event at least through 2008! A USTA Organization of the Year, CORTA once again offered a superb weekend of social activities and amenities for the players. The largest public clay court facility in the country, Cooper Creek Tennis Center, with 30 courts, is a fantastic venue for team competition.

Kudos to Local Chairman Ken Smith and his volunteer army including Nita Perry, Fred & Georgia Wise, George Panos, Aileen Mooney, Helen Martin and daughter Leslie, Judy Ostervold, Marie Arnold, Sherry Bunn, Sloan Perry, Brandi Murrah, Jane & Paul Grimes, Jan Pittman, and Frank Eslinger for providing fantastic facilities, amenities and Southern hospitality!

Everyone enjoyed the welcome party at The Estate! The lunches from Blimpie were yummy and all enjoyed the chicken dinner on Friday night at Cooper Creek.

Thanks to Vicki Everette, Sr Cup Subcommittee Chairman and Sr Cup committee members Susan Habeeb and Hugh Thomson for their efforts throughout the year and Tournament Referee Carol Fowles who has been with us for sixteen of our eighteen years!

We thank our captains for their time and dedication to this event! Becky Richardson, Darrell Blevins from Alabama; Jan Dennis, Hill Griffin from Georgia; Susan Habeeb, Greg Combs from Kentucky; Drew Meyers and Elizabeth Chesteen from Louisiana; Jane Holland, Cindy Sturdivant from Mississippi; Vicki and Maurice Everette from North Carolina; Roberta Case and Tom Foster from South Carolina; and Dana Butchee, John Nixon from Tennessee. They all deserve a huge thank you from their players and from the USTA Southern Section for their efforts before and during the event.

A huge thanks to Dene Owen and Terri Wiley for their hard work and great rapport with the players.

Dana Butchee, TN Women’s Captain, put it best when she remarked on the Women’s 35s match between Renata Marcinkowska (SC) and Fran Chandler (TN), “This was one of the finest matches ever at Senior Cup. Renata and Fran gave us the quality, quantity and sportsmanship that we all hope for in our sport and exemplify why Senior Cup captures the best of it!”
