Love Match - Richard Rula

June 1, 2004 11:39 AM

Our 4.5 Men’s Adult League team was in Louisville, Kentucky playing in the Sectional Championships. Near the end of a close third set, I was serving when I began to get dizzy and started to cramp. Knowing the importance of the match, I didn’t tell Ernie of my condition. However, I was not able to come into net effectively. After one point, Ernie looked at me and said, “You’ve got to get to the net so that we can win.” Several points later, I fell to the ground cramping over my whole body. As I was lying on the tennis court, Ernie came up to me and said, “See if you can stand up and I can play both of them. I can beat them, I know I can.” Needless to say, I couldn’t finish the match. But, to this day Ernie periodically reminds me that he could have beaten that team.

Ernie exhibits all the winning characteristics required to be a gentleman and competitor on the tennis court. Off the court, Ernie’s passion and love for the game of tennis is second only to his love and devotion to his wonderful wife, Pat. Through all of Pat’s many medical problems, Ernie has never wavered from being there every step of the way. I’m proud to have Ernie as a friend and tennis partner and admire the example he has set for all of us as a role model.
