Charleston's Brenda Carter Named to United States Women’s 55 Tennis Team

October 7, 2003 02:38 PM

The United States Tennis Association selected Brenda Carter of Charleston, SC to participate on the Maureen Connolly Cup team. Brenda is a seasoned veteran of international teams. The Maureen Connolly Cup International tennis competition for women 55 and over will be held in Antalya, Turkey, October 20-25, 2003.

The US hopes to win the prestigious Cup by defeating some dozen of the world's top women’s tennis teams. It is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Brenda was a member of the 2002 Maureen Connolly team and holds many national tennis titles including 2001 National 55 Hardcourt Singles Championship; 2001 National 55 Hardcourt Doubles Championship and the National 55 Indoor Singles Championship. In 2001, she was named the South Carolina Adult Player of the Year.

Charleston Metro Sports Council selected her as Top Ten Sports Moments Recipient in 2001 and 2002.

Carter brings a wealth of successful competitive tennis experience and versatility to this year’s US squad. She is one of only four players chosen from the United States top women’s senior players and, it is hoped, that her strength and valuable major tournament experience will benefit the team.

The United States Tennis Association owns and stages the US Open and selects the men’s and women’s teams that compete in major Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Olympic games competition. It also selects and sponsors top US players in various age groups for USTA tennis teams, such as the US Women’s 55 team, that represent the US in international team tennis competition against some of the world’s best players.
