North Carolina and Georgia Victorious at 2003 Southern Senior Cup Championships!

June 9, 2003 12:46 PM

-- By Marilyn Sherman

North Carolina won the Mildred Southern Cup by winning the Women’s Overall Championships and finishing second in the Men’s Overall Championships. Georgia won the Men’s Overall Championships and claimed the Gil Stacy Memorial Cup by one point over North Carolina. Georgia won the Women’s 35s, Men’s 55s and 75s, North Carolina won the Women’s 65s and 75s, South Carolina won the Women’s 45s and 55s, and Mississippi won the Men’s 35s and 65s.

The “crown jewel” of Southern tennis, the 17th Annual Southern Senior Cup celebrated its 10th anniversary in Columbus, GA. 300 of the top Southern players competed for their state in team competition in Men’s and Women’s 35-75 age divisions.

The Southern Senior Cup Team Championships is a phenomenal event for so many reasons. Teams include several former tour players and internationally and nationally top ranked senior players competing in a unique format that awards points for victories in several categories.

In addition to the superb tennis, it is the team camaraderie that makes many say this is their favorite tennis weekend of the year. The 35s cheer on the 75s, the men cheer for the women and visa versa. Many friendships are rekindled during these four days as well as great rivalries!

This event is testament to how GREAT our sport is and those who compete in it! Even though the weather forced us to play pro sets for Saturday and Sunday play, every point was played with intensity and for the team!

Columbus has hosted this event for ten straight years and will again host in 2004! USTA’s Organization of the Year (CORTA) once again offered a superb weekend of social activities and amenities for the players. The largest public clay court facility in the country, Cooper Creek Tennis Center, with 30 courts, is a fantastic venue for team competition. Deepest thanks to Henry Banasak and Green Island Country Club for offering courts on Sunday to ensure we could finish the event!

Kudos to Local Chairman Ken Smith and his volunteer army including Nita Perry, Mark Ruseski, Roger & Judy Pearce, Fred & Georgia Wise, Gene and Brenda Oswalt, Carol Campos, George Panos, and Janie Worthington for providing fantastic facilities, amenities and Southern hospitality!

Everyone enjoyed the welcome party at Nora and Gardner Garrard’s beautiful home! The lunches from Blimpie were yummy and all enjoyed the BBQ on Saturday night: especially the impromptu concert performed by LA’s M45 player Neil Shapiro! Rita Anderson won the “game”….TWICE! The USTA Southern Section Management Committee, Delegates and Board of Directors were on hand to watch the competition in between their meetings! Special thanks to Helen Jeter for always asking to help (we never say no!) Also thanks to Steve Duffel, our Men’s Intersectional Team Captain who also pitched in!

Thanks to Vicki Everette, Sr Cup Subcommittee Chairman’s efforts throughout the year and Tournament Referee Carol Fowles who has been with us for fifteen of our seventeen years! Many of the players are also tournament directors and referees back home and appreciated the heroic efforts by Carol to finish this event with three days of rain!

We thank our captains for their time and dedication to this event! Becky Richardson, Tom Oliphint, from Alabama, Betsy Meacham from Arkansas, Jan Dennis, Hill Griffin from Georgia, Susan Habeeb, Greg Combs from Kentucky, Drew Meyers and Bobbie Miles from Louisiana, Jane Holland, Cindy Sturdivant from Mississippi, Vicki and Maurice Everette from North Carolina, Rita Anderson and Tom Foster from South Carolina and Dana Butchee, John Nixon from Tennessee deserve a thank you from all of the players for their efforts.

A huge thanks to Dene Owen and Terri Wiley for their hard work and great rapport with the players.

Hope to see you all again next year! We can’t thank the players enough for their making the best of a wet weekend! Hope you will hang your poster with Southern’s Finest #1 Ranked players/teams at your tennis facility and help us recognize them for their tennis achievements!

I always return from this event with great satisfaction that I work for the USTA Southern Section, the largest and BEST tennis organization in the USTA!!!!!!!

If you have any suggestions for next year, please email Marilyn Sherman.
