Russian Sharapova Takes Title at Cloister Cup in Sea Island, GA

May 11, 2003 11:10 AM

While a Russian did take the singles title at the 2nd Annual Cloister Cup in Sea Island, GA, it was not won by Anna Kournikova. Maria Sharapova, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, came out strong in her match against No. 7 seed, Christina Wheeler and defeated her in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Sharapova defeated Kournikova in their highly anticipated semifinal matchup on Saturday when Kournikova pulled out with an injury. Kournikova aggravated an existing abductor injury in her quarterfinal match against Sunitha Rao.

The doubles final featured a match-up of the event's No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. The No. 1 seeded team of Lisa McShea and Christina Wheeler was strong throughout the event, not having dropped a set the entire week. The Australian team faced an American team of No. 2 seed Jennifer Embry and Jessica Lenhoff. Embry and Lenhoff had struggled throughout the tournament, needing to win three straight three-set matches to make it to the finals. In the end, Embry and Lenhoff put it all together and quickly dispatched McShea and Wheeler, 6-3, 6-4.

Wheeler was denied the chance to sweep the singles and doubles titles as the day unfolded.
