China's Shuai Peng Wins 2003 $25,000 Trustmark/USTA Challenger

April 11, 2003 02:08 PM

Four Americans remained after the second round of the 2003 Trustmark/USTA $25,000 Challenger in Jackson, MS. The group was headlined by 16 year-old Ally Baker of Nashville, who had just completed a convincing 6-2 6-1 victory over second seeded Teryn Ashley. The quarterfinals, however, were not so kind to the American contingent, as three of the four American players left in the draw were beaten.

After the quarterfinal round, only American Kristina Brandi remained. Brandi defeated fellow American Tiffany Dabek by a score of 7-5 6-1 in the quarterfinals, earning her a semifinal match against Austria's Tina Schiechtl. Brandi's run would end there, as Schiechtl defeated her in a tough three-set match 2-6 7-5 6-3.

Schiechtl faced China's Shuai Peng in the finals, with Peng winning easily, 6-2 6-4.

In the doubles, the top-seeded team of Teryn Ashley and Abigail Spears, both Americans, dropped only one set en route to the championship. Their toughest match came in the semifinals against fellow Americans Kristen Schlukebir and Jessica Lehnhoff, but Ashely and Spears advanced with a 3-6 6-1 6-3 win. They faced the Austrailian duo of Lisa McShea and Christina Wheeler in the finals, and secured the title with an easy 6-1 6-3 victory.
