USTA Member Appreciation Party a Big Success at Family Circle Cup

April 11, 2003 10:15 AM

Despite some of the nastiest weather in a long time in Charleston, the show went on at the Family Circle Cup this week. Wednesday was USTA Member Appreciation Day at the tournament, and the USTA Southern Section held a Member Appreciation Party in the hospitality area, complete with food, drink and plenty of free prizes to go around. Ron Pfeiffer of the Low Country Tennis Association ran the show, and it was without a doubt a smashing success.

Over 330 card-carrying USTA members attended the party, and took advantage of the opportunity to get out of the cold and get something to eat. Former French Open Doubles Champion Luke Jensen was on hand signing autographs, and he spoke to the members about dealing with tough conditions during a match and who his favorites for the tournament were. All in all the party was a great success, and next year's event promises to be even better.

QUESTION OF THE DAY:
What is your favorite part of the tournament?

"We love to watch the doubles. It's so fast and there's so much action." - Alice and Howard Gollner, Kokomo, IN

"We just like to roam around. We always like to come early and watch the new players." - Kenneth and Zenaida Mah, Pawley's Island, SC

"I just like watching all the players and the competition." - Gladys Watson, Pittsburg, PA

"We love to watch Serena Williams practice. She was out there hitting with a guy and he couldn't keep up, so they put another guy out there with him. She ran both of them into the ground." - John Tucker, Pottstown, PA
