USTA Professional Circuit Tournaments Coming Up in Atlanta and Mobile

March 17, 2003 04:18 PM

The USTA Pro Circuit, the world's largest professional tour for tennis development, is designed to help up-and-coming players compete against players from around the globe and develop into champions. Past participants include Anna Kournikova, Lindsey Davenport, Mary Pierce, Justine Henin and many more. The following are two events taking place in the coming week in the USTA Southern Section.

The Neighborhood Charter School USTA Women's $25K Challenger
Held at The Racquet Club of The South in Norcross, GA on March 24-30, 2003, this tournament will feature world class professional tennis players from all over the world and will benefit The Neighborhood Charter School, an in-town elementary school in Grant Park, which opened in the fall of 2002. The 98 year old Atlanta school building, housing the 105 kindergarten through third grade students, was destroyed by fire in February following a full year of extensive remodeling by parents and volunteers.

Admission to the event is free, but donations benefitting the Neighborhood Charter School will be accepted.

The 32 singles qualifying will begin Sunday, March 23, and the 32 player main draw will begin Tuesday, March 25. The 8-team doubles qualifying will begin Monday, March 24 at 12:30 PM, with the 16-team main doubles draw scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 25.

As part of the week’s events a Pro-Am is scheduled for Monday, March 24. Any player interested in enjoying an afternoon of great tennis with these pros and an evening of great fun should contact the tournament director, Peggy May at 843-290-1570. Cost per participant is $75 for the Pro-AM; $100 for the Pro-Am and Player party. Participation is limited to the first 16 who call!

  • "Adopt a Pro, not really" - Thirty-two families and individuals will prepare and distribute welcome baskets for the pros at check in. Included will in the baskets will be gatorade drinks, snacks and a welcome note. Each family will also cheer on their "adopted" pro throughout the tournament. The children of these families are invited to "Kids Night Out" with the pros and the adults are invited to the player pizza party.
  • "Media Day" (Monday March 24) - Media are invited to play in a "team" tournament with a pro coach and/or player. Elected Mobile officials will act as the line judges. Mobile's famous "Azalea Trail Maids" will be there to greet participants.
  • "Kids Night Out with the Pros" (Monday, March 24) - Games and clinic activities with pros followed by a pizza party. The 160 juniors currently participating in the winter season of the USA Team Tennis program and the Tennis Center Clinics are invited.
