Learn from a Master with Van Der Meer Tennis

February 17, 2003 12:29 PM
Dennis Van der Meer has established himself as one of the foremost tennis teachers in the world. A former top player in his native South Africa, he went on to coach Margaret Court and Billie Jean King and then established his own teaching center on Hilton Head Island. Famous for having taught more people how to play and teach than anyone in the history of tennis, Van der Meer was named Tennis Magazine's Teaching Pro of the Decade.
With an exceptional staff, Dennis Van der Meer's Standard Method of instruction is designed to let players train with the best for great results. At the 17-court Van Der Meer Tennis Center and the 20-court Van Der Meer Shipyard Tennis Resort, both on Hilton Head Island, the focus on tennis is intense for all ages and abilities. Whether it's weeklong or weekend, clinics include stroke analysis, competitive drills, supervised match play and tactical sessions.
But Van der Meer's distinction in the world of big-name pros is his willingness to spend unusual amounts of time teaching your average player. Most months he personally conducts one or more of the major clinics offered at his tennis centers, and the schedules make explicitly clear which are his and which are led by senior staff. He doesn't just show up, make a brief personal appearance, and disappear. When Van der Meer runs a clinic he is there for the duration, on the court, actively teaching from the first minute to the last.
Van Der Meer Tennis is also the home of a year-round junior academy. The goal of the academy is to help players achieve a balance in their high performance tennis training, their academic pursuits and the independent demands of their daily lives. By limiting the numbers in the program, they are able to personalize each players program of training and studies to maximize successful outcomes. Acceptance is based on ranking. High State, Sectional, National or International ranking for long-term boarding. Short term and Summer programs as well as training for top-ranked collegiate and WTA/ATP Tour players are also available.
