Southern Tennis Official of the Year Award Winner

December 18, 2002 04:12 PM

Kristi Smith
Auburn, AL

A tennis official since 1998, Kristi Smith has quickly worked her way up through the ranks in Alabama. She started her officiating career by working mostly community and Alabama state events, but today she is one of the finest tennis officials in all of the South and perhaps the nation.

She has worked many top ITF tournaments and in 2002 alone officiated at several professional level events. These include sitting as Chair Umpire at seven $10k-$75k USTA Circuit Events and Chief Umpire at two USTA Circuit Events. She worked as Line and Chair Umpire at two WTA events, one in Memphis and the other at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, and was a Line Umpire at one ATP event, also in Memphis. Perhaps her most exciting experience of 2002 was being a Chair and Line Umpire at the 2002 US Open and working two Davis Cup ties in Oklahoma City and Houston. Kristi also worked many collegiate level events and was the Chief Umpire at the World Challenge Wheelchair Tournament in Birmingham. Kristi is also a strong officiating promoter, as she has organized and recruited for two line clinics in Dothan, AL and recruited four people to attend Provisional Umpiring School.
