Southern Section Tennis Facilities Awarded Six of Twelve USTA Adopt-a-Court Grants

December 9, 2002 02:46 PM

The USTA today announced that 12 public tennis facilities around the country have received grants through the USTA Adopt-a-Court program. The grants, which total over $27,000, will be used to renovate and refurbish 37 tennis courts at these facilities. The USTA Adopt-a-Court program, an offshoot of the USTA Technical Committee, is a cooperative program administered by the USTA and local communities that provides grants specifically for the repair or upgrade of public tennis facilities. The USTA Adopt-a-Court program is sponsored by Deco System, one of the nation's top tennis court surfacing companies.

The USTA Adopt-a-Court program has allocated grants to the following 12 public tennis facilities:

Giving back to the community is an essential aspect of the USTA’s mission to promote and develop the growth of tennis,” said Tom Fetzer, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “Through the Adopt-a-Court program, we are able to breathe life into older, worn tennis courts, and get the people of these communities excited about playing tennis."

Established in 1999, the USTA Adopt-A-Court program has grown each year, providing larger grants to an increasing number of facilities every year. In its four years of existence, the program has given grants to 72 tennis facilities to refurbish courts. In 2003 alone, the USTA Adopt-A-Court program expects to give grants to over 100 tennis facilities throughout all 17 USTA Sections, including Hawaii and the Caribbean.
