Playing Limitations and Formats

The following Daily Playing Limitations have been approved as GUIDELINES for PLANNING AND RUNNING USTA SOUTHERN SECTION SANCTIONED TOURNAMENTS. The USTA Southern Section welcomes comments and recommendations for revision if required prior to their becoming binding as part of our Rules and Regulations. Players and tournament directors are requested to forward their comments and recommendations to the Sectional Office.

A. The maximum number of matches and rest periods between matches will be in accordance with the USTA Rules in "Friend at Court."

B. No player shall compete in more than one division in singles and one division in doubles in a tournament containing singles and doubles and no player shall compete in more than two divisions of doubles in a tournament containing doubles only unless the Tournament Director decides that court facilities, length of tournament time and number of entries in the division affected will permit play in additional divisions. His/her decision shall be final. A statement on the tournament entry blank should state that the tournament director may have to prohibit some players from playing three events if the draw size or scheduling problems necessitate this action.

C. For all adult divisions, except the Men's Open, a ten-minute rest break must be taken after the second set if either player or team requests it.

D. At least one can of new USTA approved tennis balls shall be furnished for each match (singles, doubles, consolation). The same brand and color of tennis balls must, if available, be used for all matches throughout the tournament.

E. If a tournament advertises in its entry form that the event will use an alternative scoring format such as tiebreak in lieu of 3rd set, results from that event shall be used for Southern rankings. Tournaments are limited to USTA approved scoring formats which include no-ad, tiebreak in lieu of 3rd set with set tiebreak or the preferred match tiebreak, short sets, etc...see Rule 27, Rules of Tennis for full descriptions.
