2007 Award - Team Tennis Event / Program of the Year

Team Tennis Event / Program of the Year Award
Presented annually to a USTA Southern Section event that best demonstrates outstanding execution of a team event.

2007 Alabama BMW Combo Doubles Championship
Gulf Shores, AL
It may be the allure of the beautiful beaches or the three amazing facilities that keep players heading back to the USTA Alabama BMW Combo Championships year after year. Gulf Shores, AL has been the proud host of the BMW Combo Doubles for the past decade. The event participation has climbed each year, reaching a total of 1,007 players in 2007.

Peninsula Racquet Club, The Beach Club and The Plantation volunteer their beautiful facilities when the tournament visits each fall. The tournament requires the use of 46 courts for the four day event and due to the popularity of tennis in Gulf Shores; the city is adding six more courts for use in the 2008 Championships.

The event is more than a tennis tournament with the atmosphere stimulated by the forty volunteers on hand to administrate the tournament desk, court maintenance and player party. Thanks to tournament participant, Bubba Bussey of the popular Rick and Bubba radio show, tennis and the BMW Combo Championships received plenty of air time. Listeners and players called into the show to talk tennis with their favorite radio host. The air time fueled several inquiries regarding how to get involved in USTA League tennis.

The player party held at The Beach Club made for a luxurious backdrop for a poolside gathering. With catered food, disc jockeys for entertainment and incredible door prizes, players were treated to a unique tennis experience.

Other nominees: USTA League State Championships 2.5 and 3.0, GA; 5th Annual Baton Rouge St. Jude Classic, LA; USTA MS Sr. Mixed Doubles, MS; LATA Jr. Team Tennis, SC; Carolina Cup Team Championships, SC.
