2007 Award - Special Tennis Event of the Year

Special Tennis Event of the Year
Presented annually to a special tennis event in the USTA Southern Section that has been exemplary in its promotion and support of tennis.

Get Fired Up to Take a Cop to Court
Starkville, MS
The Starkville Tennis Association put their local men in uniform to the test with a friendly on court competition between the Starkville Policemen and Firemen. The event entitled “Get Fired Up to Take a Cop to Court” brought over 100 spectators to the Starkville High School courts for the showdown.

When the Starkville Tennis Association was looking to host a community event, the firemen and policemen were the first choices.

“They stay in top physical condition and they are admired by the community. These are people who put their lives on the line to protect us, our families and our community,” said STA board member Martha Watkins.

Several weeks of lessons and practices for the hometown heroes were provided courtesy of Starkville Tennis Association. The athletes traded in their gear for tennis racquets that were donated from STA members. The players faced off in front of a divided crowd, with fans dressed in blue for the police force and red for the firemen. Onlookers enjoyed hotdogs and hamburgers from the grill while organizers raffled off door prizes donated from local vendors. After a hard fought battle, the firemen pulled out the win, but both organizations walked away with sizable donations raised from the event.

Other nominees: COTA/UGA Tennis Block Party, Watkinsville, GA; NORD 2007 Summer Tennis Carnival, New Orleans, LA.
