2007 Award - Junior Tournament of the Year Award

Junior Tournament of the Year Award
Awarded annually to the USTA-sanctioned junior tournament in the Southern Section that best demonstrates the USTA and Southern Section standards of organizing and conducting a sanctioned junior tournament.

USTA Southern BullFrog Designated
Mobild, AL
The Mobile Tennis Center stands as the world’s largest public tennis facility and serves as the host site to over 20 tournaments a year. From charity events to high school, Sectional and National Championships, it’s no surprise that Lorraine Novak and her husband have excelled at running tournaments. The 2007 USTA Southern Designated Bullfrog is the perfect example of how a tournament is more than just tennis but a fun experience for the players, families, and coaches.

The entire facility was decorated in a Halloween theme with lights and large animations taking over the grounds and Halloween candy available all weekend. Families enjoyed a catered meal while players and coaches registered. A specialty grill chef sold food during the event, but for those that wanted to venture into Mobile, an Information Concierge gave directions and tourism information.

Special vendors at the event added other activities to enjoy while at the tennis center. Renowned sports psychologist, Jorge Valverde gave a free seminar. InfoTech was on site to use their “Dartfish” video filming and stroke analysis technology. All-American Imaging served as the event photographer, setting up laptops for players to view and order action shots. They also had a special set up to take head shots and print large “Fat Head Image” posters. All photos were printed on the spot.

The tournament was just as organized as it was eventful. Taking place mainly at Mobile Tennis Center’s 60 courts, city maintenance had the courts and facility cleaned and ready for action by 7 a.m. each day. Scores were reported online with updates every five minutes and on the site’s 8ft by 24ft board. The players had four warm up courts throughout the event. On championship day, awards were given out to the top six finalists in each age group.

Other nominees include: Sunset Hills Summer Sizzle, GA; Kingston Plantation Junior Classic, SC; NC State Junior Clay Court Open, NC; North Mississippi Junior Open Championship, MS; AFLAC presents Louisiana State Closed Junior Qualifying, LA.
