2007 Jr. Team Tennis Organizer of the Year

This inaugural award is presented to an individual in the USTA Southern Section who has been outstanding in the coordination of Jr. Team Tennis League play.

Deby Caldwell
Columbus, GA
Described as the heart and soul of the Jr. Team Tennis program, Deby Caldwell has been a catalyst to growing the game in Columbus, GA. Working in the school systems to encourage after school programs, Caldwell was able to meet with PE teachers to get tennis incorporated in curriculum. She leveraged her relationship with school administrators to present programming at school assemblies and promote Jr. Team Tennis leagues.

Caldwell recruited 144 players that divided into 12 teams during her first year as program coordinator. In conjunction with Columbus Regional Tennis Association (CORTA), Caldwell attracted juniors across the area and doubled the number of participants for spring season of Jr. Team Tennis. Middle School tennis in Columbus has continued to grow with the incorporation of public, private and home school programs. To capture future tennis stars at an early age, the eight and under league was established to introduce young children to tennis on 36’ courts.

The explosion of participation in Jr. Team Tennis in Columbus can be credited to Caldwell’s leadership. Her organizational skills and marketing expertise have drawn the attention to CORTA’s junior programming. In turn, Caldwell has helped train several coordinators across the state and served as a presenter at Local League Coordinator workshops.
